Norwich School,  a fourteenth century foundation within the cathedral close, was Nelson's first school. In his autobiography he called it the "high-school at Norwich". He attended the school with his brother William. No records exist of his time there but we do know that he joined the school in 1767, after his ninth birthday. The Nelson family had a number of links with Norwich. Several generations earlier his great great grandfather had been a succesful manufacturer in the city, and during Nelson's time there he had a great aunt and a cousin living there. This meant that although he and William were boarders they had relatives who they could visit on their half-days.

On December 27 of that year Nelson's mother died and that may have been one of the reasons that during 1768 William and Horatio left Norwich to attend the Sir William Paston School at North Walsham. Records show that they were 2 of 6 boys who all removed from Norwich to North Walsham that year.
